Operation Tangerine is a level made using Far Cry 5 level editor.
It's a headhunt level where players are tasked with taking out three military officers in an air base and then get out alive.
Being a long time fan of the Hitman franchise, I set out to create a level where players can approach their mission in countless different ways. Both how to enter the airbase, to assassinate the targets and even how to get out. This creates countless permutationd on how players can tackle the mission.
4: Gas Station
10: Radar Tower
13: Barrack 2
15: Air Control Tower
18: Final hurdle
Spawn: Players are spawned atop a hill overlooking the level, a path leading both to the village and to the petrol station/warehouse.
Hilltop: From spawn, players can see a campfire atop a hill, casting light on its surrounding. Rocks have been placed behind the fire to make it more prominent. This spot offers an excellent vantage point and offers a zipline leading to the warehouse and petrol station.
Warehouse: The warehouse is a messy lot opposite the gas station. In it players can find a rocket launcher and a powerful revolver.
Gas station: The gas station contains a med kit and two fast cars for players to choose between.
Cellphone mast: On a small hill next to the air base, there's a cellphone mast. Players can scale it for a vantage point, as well as to be able to zipline down to the runway.
Village: The most direct way to the air base is through the small village. It offers a relatively simple challenge in terms of both stealth and action.
Secret: A house with a flickering TV attracts curious players to find a room containing a revolver, a shotgun and ammunition.
Gap: A gap in the fence surrounding
Checkpoint: The most obvious entry point is through the guarded checkpoint.
Radar Building: The first target resides inside the heavily guarded radar building.
Armory: The airbase armory contains an M60 for those who desire to attack directly. Or remote explosives for those who prefer to remain unseen.
Barrack 1: The second target is in a barrack with some protection
Barrack 2: Not only a means for sneaking towards the hangar, players can also find some ammunition.
Hangar: The final target is located in the hangar, better guarded than his colleagues.
Air Control Tower: Players can climb up to the air control tower to quickly and silently reach...
Ramp: Whether players desire to leave by car or on foot, the ramp is the perfect way out.
Path: For players who leave the base on foot, there's a shorter path leading over a ridge that players can take instead. A big and bold sign lets players know it exists.
Final hurdle: If players have chosen to go loud and amassed a large body count, additional enemies spawn, creating a final challenge as they speed towards the finish.
Finish: The player's final destination.
Colors and shapes
When creating the level, I paid particular attention to framing and light.
Players spawn on a hilltop with a good view over the level. Without movint the mouse, they have a view over the air base, the front gate, the antenna, gas station and warehouse, as well as a sign pointing players to follow the path leading towards the latter destination. Just by looking in that directions, players can see the flickering light illuminating the zipline they can use to get to the warehouse and antenna quickly.
The buildings that players can enter have lights turned on and danger spots, such as the guard booth and machine gun towers have red tinted lights. The hills on the sun side of the level have been crafted specifically to allow light to illuminate the more vital parts of the map.
When players get behind the wheel of the cars at the petrol station, guards, signs and fences guide them towards the front gate of the air base.
